# Overview

> What hacking on Fonoster looks like, who this section is for, and where to start.

![Fonoster, from source: a terminal runs npm run dev, and every component reloads as you save.](https://mintcdn.com/fonoster/GsxtawNPYOQvohG4/images/hacking/banner-light.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=GsxtawNPYOQvohG4\&q=85\&s=8ae6e27df9423d8aa6815a418c2bd037)

This section is for people who change Fonoster itself: fix a bug, add a feature, or work on one of
its components. To build agents and voice apps on Fonoster, start at the
[Introduction](https://docs.fonoster.com/introduction.md). To run it on your own servers, see
[Self-hosting](https://docs.fonoster.com/self-hosting/overview.md).

You develop in the dev container, and only there. The dependencies run as containers (the Roomr
node too: it is developed in [fonoster/roomr](https://github.com/fonoster/roomr)), and the API
server, appbridge, Autopilot and dashboard run from your source with reload. Fake speech
and AI providers stand in for the vendors, so you need no keys to make a call.

> Open the dev container, start every component and call an agent from your
> browser.
