An upgrade unpacks the new release next to your install, carries over the files that are yours and starts the new release on the same volumes. Your data, secrets and keys stay. The steps below upgrade an install in /opt/fonoster to 0.43.0. Use your own folder and the release you upgrade to.

Before you begin

  • Read the changelog for every release between yours and the new one. An entry that changes a file in config/ names the file and each key it adds, renames or removes.
  • Back up .env, config/keys/ and the database.

What the release replaces

The archive replaces the files Fonoster ships. The files that hold your secrets and your settings are yours, and you carry them over:
Apply your edits to the new release’s file. Copy an old file over it only when this release’s changelog names no change to it.

Upgrade

1

Unpack the new release

Download fonoster-0.43.0.tar.gz, then unpack it into a new folder next to your install:
2

Copy your secrets and keys

Copy .env, the signing keys and the certificate into the new folder:
3

Carry over your settings

List the differences between the two config/ folders:
For each file you edited, make the same edit in the new release’s file. Differences you didn’t make come from the new release: keep them.
4

Start the new release

Run init.sh in the new folder, then start it:
init.sh keeps every line of .env, adds the names the new release introduces and sets FONOSTER_VERSION to the new release. .env keeps the same COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAME, so Compose replaces the old containers and uses the same volumes.
docker compose ps lists every service Up, and you sign in to the dashboard as before.
Keep the old folder until you have checked the new release. To go back, run docker compose up -d --remove-orphans in the old folder.
